Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, met with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi today to discuss enhancing sports infrastructure and youth engagement in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). This meeting focused on improving athletic excellence in the region, marking a significant step toward sports modernization.
During the meeting, Sharma presented a comprehensive memorandum, emphasizing the J&K Government’s ambition to transform the Union Territory into an epicenter for sports and youth empowerment. His proposals aim to foster an environment that encourages athletic participation and nurtures young talent.
The memorandum proposed key initiatives surrounding infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots participation. These initiatives align with the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022, aiming to cultivate a robust sports culture in the region.
Sharma urged the Union Government for assistance in expediting the creation of world-class sports facilities. This includes advancing the plans for the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg, modernizing district stadiums with all-weather capabilities, and establishing sports facilities at the panchayat level. Such actions would significantly enhance access for rural youth.
Additionally, he called for the expansion of Khelo India grassroots programs, which aim to integrate sports into the broader educational framework. He also sought an increase in scholarships and financial aid for athletes, the incorporation of sports science and physiotherapy into training regimens, and the promotion of public-private partnerships (PPP) to manage sports infrastructure effectively.
In a bid to enhance sports-linked tourism and global exposure, Sharma proposed organizing international winter sports events in Gulmarg. This initiative positions Jammu and Kashmir as a premier destination for winter and adventure sports, attracting both national and international tourism.
To back these ambitious plans, Sharma requested the early release of ₹103.82 crores under Khelo India to finalize critical infrastructure projects. This funding is essential for implementing the discussed strategies and ensuring timely development.
Expressing his commitment, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya assured Sharma that a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports would soon be established. He stated that funds for sports equipment would be allocated to support both current and upcoming initiatives, paving the way for greater engagement in sports across J&K.
The discussions held today underscore the importance of cooperative efforts between the Union and state government to enhance sporting facilities and foster youth development in Jammu and Kashmir. With increased support, Jammu and Kashmir aims to emerge as a model for sports excellence in India.
