Sarfaraz Khan Joins Team India for 1st Sri Lanka Test

Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan joined Team India in Galle as they prepare for the first Test against Sri Lanka, commencing on August 15. His inclusion came after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out due to injury, allowing Sarfaraz to showcase his talent on the international stage once again.

The first Test marks the beginning of a crucial two-match series for India, who aim to strengthen their position in the World Test Championship standings. Sarfaraz’s journey to the national team reflects his hard work and resilience.

Posting a selfie in Indian colors on Instagram, Sarfaraz revealed his transformed physique, attributing his lean look to a rigorous fitness regime over recent months.

Back in November 2024, Sarfaraz last donned the India jersey against New Zealand. That series concluded with a historic first home defeat in over a decade. Earlier that same year, he made his Test debut against England, leaving a mark with his potential.

Despite being included in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia in 2024-25, Sarfaraz did not get the opportunity to play. However, his stats from six Tests demonstrate promise: he has accumulated 371 runs in 11 innings with a commendable average of 37.10, including one century and three half-centuries, with a highest score of 150.

Sarfaraz’s consistent performance in domestic cricket strengthened his case for selection. During the Ranji Trophy, he amassed 429 runs across seven matches at an impressive average of 53.62, featuring one century and one fifty, with a top score of 227.

In the T20 arena, during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Sarfaraz excelled with 329 runs in seven innings at an average of 65.80 and a remarkable strike rate of 203.09, which included one century and three fifties.

His performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy was equally stellar, scoring 303 runs in six games, showcasing an average of 75.75. He struck a century and two fifties with an impressive strike rate of 190.56.

The Mumbai star recently signed a contract with Chennai Super Kings for Rs 75 lakh. His stint in the IPL included 161 runs in seven innings, revealing a strike rate nearing 170, despite a modest overall average.

Moreover, his participatory efforts in the Mumbai T20 League with Aakash Tigers MWS saw him contribute 161 runs across five innings at an average of 32.20 and a strike rate of 214.67, including one half-century.

Currently, India sits at fifth place in the World Test Championship standings, garnering four wins and experiencing four losses in nine matches. Their Points Percentage (PCT) is recorded at 48.150. The cricketing fraternity anticipates that Sarfaraz’s inclusion may provide the much-needed boost to India’s batting lineup.

India’s squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka now features:
