The Jammu and Kashmir Police have enforced a robust multi-layered security framework across the Kashmir Valley to ensure a peaceful observation of Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2023. This was confirmed by V K Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, during a press briefing held on Tuesday.
While speaking to journalists after a security review meeting at Balidan Stambh in Srinagar, Birdi reiterated the effectiveness of the security arrangements in place. He stated, “The Jammu and Kashmir Police always maintains robust security not just in Srinagar city, but across various districts of the valley.”
Birdi emphasized that security measures extend beyond the event venues, encompassing the surrounding areas to ensure the safety of all participants. The police chief expressed confidence in the readiness of security personnel to handle any challenges during the celebrations.
In regard to the recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama, Birdi stated, “The investigation is ongoing, and it would not be appropriate for me to disclose specifics at this time. We will provide updates when there is pertinent information.”
With the celebrations approaching, Birdi called upon the public to participate in large numbers, highlighting that such events are a community affair. “This is a public function. The police merely act as facilitators and organizers. We urge people to come out and make these functions successful,” he added.
On the preceding day, Birdi convened a security review meeting, joined by high-ranking officials from the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Additional Commissioner of Srinagar. The meeting focused on assessing the logistical and security arrangements for the upcoming Independence Day events.
During the meeting, senior officers briefed Birdi on the preparedness of their respective districts. District police heads shared insights on the various plans implemented for the celebrations.
The IGP instructed officers to enhance area dominance and patrolling efforts, especially in sensitive locations. He specifically reviewed security arrangements gearing up for the main event at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, urging officers to finalize preparations promptly.
Furthermore, Birdi emphasized the need to bolster security checkpoints during night hours, particularly in areas deemed vulnerable and along key entry and exit routes in the city. His directives aim for heightened alertness to thwart any threats that could disrupt the celebrations.
As part of these heightened security measures, police conducted surprise checks and frisking in Lal Chowk and other significant urban spaces to ensure safety and public order.
This Independence Day comes against a backdrop of heightened vigilance and preparedness, reflecting the ongoing commitment of the Jammu and Kashmir Police to guarantee the safety of all attendees and maintain peace in the region.
