Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also chairs the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfers to eligible beneficiaries under various welfare schemes.
Officials confirmed that the sanctioned amount has been allocated to all Assistant Labour Commissioners for immediate distribution into the bank accounts of registered construction workers. This move reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to support labourers, especially those in vulnerable positions.
The welfare assistance includes provisions for education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illnesses, support for next of kin of deceased workers, marriage assistance, and meritorious awards for children of registered workers. Such schemes are pivotal for enhancing the quality of life for the workers and their families.
During the 22nd meeting of JKBOCWWB held in July, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a broader and more inclusive definition of ‘construction worker.’ He asserted that this approach would enable more vulnerable labourers in the unorganised sector to benefit from vital welfare measures.
Omar Abdullah reiterated the government’s commitment to examine innovative policy mechanisms that expand social security coverage, ensuring financial protection for workers. He aims to align the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated, affirming his government’s dedication to safeguarding labour rights and dignity across Jammu and Kashmir.
In a separate but related development, Chief Minister Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over a tragic accident involving a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The accident occurred early this morning, leading to loss of lives and injuries.
He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. Reports indicate that a bus transporting 46 Indian pilgrims collided with a tanker while travelling from Mecca to Medina, resulting in the death of 45 pilgrims, with only one survivor who sustained serious injuries.
The government’s actions in both welfare initiatives and responses to tragedies reflect a deep-rooted commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring that support systems are in place for all, especially during tough times.
