India’s star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are keen to represent the country in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the significance of focusing on present performance over future aspirations. This statement came in the wake of Gambhir’s comments on Tuesday.
As Indian selectors already signal a transition phase with Shubman Gill appointed as the ODI captain, the questions surrounding Kohli and Sharma’s long-term roles in the squad increase. Both seasoned players will be 39 and 40 years old, respectively, at the time of the tournament.
“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is very important to stay in the present,” Gambhir stated. He acknowledged the duo’s experience would be invaluable during the upcoming series in Australia, hoping for successful performances from both players and the team.
With nine ODIs scheduled against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand over the next few months, the final decision on Kohli and Sharma’s participation in the World Cup could depend significantly on their performances in these matches.
As Gambhir settles into his role as head coach, he focuses on transitioning the team across all formats. One of his priorities includes identifying upcoming talent and stabilizing the selection process.
“First and foremost, you look at talent. Then the work ethic. You look at the character in that dressing room — especially in red-ball cricket,” Gambhir explained. He further added that a player’s hunger for the game is equally important for achieving success at the international level.
Gambhir characterized the climate of international cricket as an “insecure environment” due to the fierce competition for limited spots on the team. He stressed the importance of allowing players time to develop their skills, advocating for players to have a longer run rather than frequent changes in the lineup.
“It’s important to give players a longer run. Only 15 can represent the country at one time, but many are waiting for their turn,” he noted, advocating for the selection of the right personalities that could thrive given the right environment.
When discussing the emotional challenges involved in selection, Gambhir rejected the term ‘dropping players,’ emphasizing empathy over ruthlessness when making such decisions.
“You don’t drop players; you only select players. When someone misses out, the least a coach can do is be empathetic,” he stated, reflecting on the human aspect of selection.
Gambhir praised the team’s work ethic, especially during their recent tour of England, where he noted, “The Test squad that went to England was superb in terms of discipline and hard work. For me, that was a huge tick.” Overall, the coach reassured fans of the commitment and dedication present within the current squad.
