Jammu and Kashmir showcased exceptional talent at the 10th All India Inter-Sports Authority of India (SAI) Kayaking and Canoeing Championships held at the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Alleppey from October 10-13, 2023. The state finished a commendable fourth overall in the senior category amidst fierce competition
The four-day event brought together participants from eight SAI centres across the nation, signifying a platform for India’s best water sports athletes. The NCOE Alleppey team emerged as the overall champions of the championship. Following them were the powerful contingents from NCOE Bhopal and NCOE Jagatpur.
Jammu and Kashmir athletes collected a noteworthy total of eight medals: two gold, two silver, and four bronze. This performance represents one of the state’s finest showings at the national level in recent years.
The standout achievement came from Mohammad Hussain and Sajad Hussain, who claimed double gold in the senior men’s canoe doubles events for both 200m and 500m. Their spectacular performances had previously garnered them attention during the Khelo India Water Sports Festival, hosted in August at the iconic Dal Lake, Srinagar.
The contest at Alleppey featured a total of 197 athletes, including 92 girls, competing in 96 medal events. Prominent SAI centres from regions including Bhopal, Jagatpur, Port Blair, Bilaspur, Roorkee, and EME also competed fiercely for top honors.
According to officials, the Khelo India Water Sports Festival has significantly elevated water sports within the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi even acknowledged its achievers in his August “Mann Ki Baat” address, emphasizing the event’s importance in boosting enthusiasm around aquatic disciplines.
NCOE Alleppey dominated the championship, tallying 24 gold and 15 silver medals across both senior and junior categories. NCOE Bhopal secured 11 gold medals in senior events and led the sub-junior competition with an impressive seven golds. Jagatpur continued its strong performance, finishing among the top three teams in overall standings across all categories.
In terms of state rankings, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Kerala claimed the top spots at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival. This reflects the growing depth and strength of water sports talent across India, igniting hopes for future international successes.
