On Thursday, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat delivered a speech at the centenary Vijayadashami function in Nagpur, reaffirming the organisation’s unwavering commitment to character building known as ‘vyakti nirman’. This event not only marked the RSS’s 100-year journey but also highlighted its decision to shun political pursuits.
Addressing a gathering of swayamsevaks, Bhagwat aimed to reflect on the learnings from the RSS’s century-long mission. He articulated a vision for continuous social transformation, emphasizing that reforms in the global order should evolve gradually to avoid chaos.
Bhagwat stated, “India must present a development model based on a holistic and integrated outlook, rooted in dharma, and offer it to the world.” His discourse shed light on dharma, explaining that it transcends mere rituals or worship and serves as a fundamental principle binding diverse communities.
In his remarks, Bhagwat noted that the RSS’s primary focus has remained on running its shakhas (branches) and nurturing integrity, selflessness, and social leadership among its members. He strongly asserted, “Over the last 100 years, the RSS has been offered temptations and even invited to enter politics. But the Sangh has focused only on running shakhas and character-building.”
According to Bhagwat, vyakti nirman has emerged as the essential path for sustainable social change, shaped by the collective experience of swayamsevaks. He urged members to perceive India’s immense diversity in languages, faiths, and lifestyles as a vital strength contributing to the nation’s identity.
“All communities, including those who adopted foreign religions, are part of the larger Indian identity,” he outlined, advocating for harmony, mutual respect, and a strong stance against violence.
Additionally, he condemned hooliganism and efforts aimed at igniting communal discord. He urged law enforcement agencies to operate impartially. Furthermore, Bhagwat called on the youth to remain vigilant, organized, and ready to act whenever required to maintain peace and societal harmony.
This centenary celebration not only serves as a reminder of the RSS’s enduring principles but also positions the organisation as a pivotal player in India’s social landscape. Bhagwat’s reiteration of vyakti nirman underscores its relevance in addressing contemporary social challenges.
