The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir police has charged two residents of Punjab in a significant fake recruitment scam involving the Military Engineering Services (MES) on March 19, 2023. Bakshish Singh from Amritsar and Amandeep Singh from Jalandhar face allegations of conducting a fraudulent operation that cheated victims out of ₹14 lakh under false pretenses of job placements in the MES.
The scam emerged when two residents from Samba district engaged with the accused, who falsely promised them lucrative positions within the MES. The victims reported the incident, prompting an investigation by the authorities. The Special Crime Wing (SCW) of the Jammu Crime Branch filed the chargesheet in the court of the Additional Special Mobile Magistrate in Samba.
According to an official spokesperson from the Crime Branch, Bakshish Singh was arrested following a thorough investigation. However, co-accused Amandeep Singh remains at large, evading capture despite concerted efforts that included extensive raids and the issuance of a lookout notice.
Law enforcement is now initiating proceedings to declare Amandeep a proclaimed offender as efforts to locate him continue. The victims received counterfeit appointment letters which led them to various locations, including Ranchi and Meerut, under the guise of conducting medical examinations and joining formalities.
Verification from the MES authorities confirmed that the letters were entirely forged, revealing that the department never issued any such documentation. This revelation shocked the victims and underscored the operation’s fraudulent nature.
In the process of the investigation, the SCW gathered substantial evidence, including documentary proofs, digital traces, and financial records from bank transactions. This evidence validated the claims made by the victims and implicated the accused in the scam.
In light of this incident, the Crime Branch has urged the public to exercise caution concerning job recruitment offers. They advised individuals to authenticate such opportunities through official government channels, highlighting the susceptibility of job seekers to these fraudulent schemes.
