On September 27, India disclosed that Pakistan’s military had “pleaded” for a cessation of fighting during Operation Sindoor. This operation, launched on May 7, targeted terror infrastructure in response to an attack that killed 26 civilians. First Secretary in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Petal Gahlot, made these revelations after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the UN General Assembly, attributing peace efforts to former US President Donald Trump.
In his speech to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Sharif hailed Trump’s influence, stating, “His efforts for peace helped avert a war in South Asia.” He praised both Trump and Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue with India, calling for a “composite, comprehensive, and result-oriented” approach to resolving outstanding issues, primarily focused on Kashmir.
During Gahlot’s response at the UNGA, he criticized Sharif’s remarks, referring to them as “absurd theatrics” that glorified terrorism. Gahlot emphasized India’s position, highlighting that the cessation of hostilities agreement resulted from direct military discussions. He firmly stated, “There is no room for any third party to intervene in matters between New Delhi and Islamabad.”
Operation Sindoor was a critical response by India following the deadly terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam. This operation marked a significant escalation of India’s military efforts to dismantle terror networks operating from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Despite Sharif’s calls for dialogue, India maintains a robust stance against terrorism and underscores that any discussions must first address the underlying issues linked to cross-border terrorism. Pakistan, however, continues to advocate for negotiations, claiming readiness to engage with India for peace.
