New Delhi, Oct 26: An NGO, Save Culture, Save Bharat Foundation, has demanded legal action against OTT platforms for airing sexually explicit content, arguing that such programming disrupts India’s social fabric. Founded by former Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, the NGO claimed to have filed a complaint with Mumbai Police targeting the OTT platform ALTT and its promoters for promoting explicit material.
Mahurkar criticized OTT services for making harmful, sexually explicit content easily accessible to the public, asserting that exposure to such material is a key factor in rising sexual crimes, including rape cases, across India. The Delhi-based NGO claimed that OTT platforms violate several Indian laws, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, Information Technology Act, Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, and various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“If left unchecked, such content fosters an environment where harmful sexual practices are normalized, posing a serious threat to the nation’s social fabric. Immediate legal action is essential to curb this issue,” stated Vineet Jindal, a lawyer associated with the NGO.
Mahurkar added that the NGO recently hosted a public hearing where over 100 survivors of sexual violence and their families called for explicit content to be removed from all OTT platforms.
