Jammu, October 25, 2023 – In a significant show of dissent, leaders of the ruling National Conference (NC) staged a protest on Wednesday, marking the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. This pivotal move stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status, and the NC is now rallying for its restoration.
Scores of NC leaders, including MLAs and party workers, gathered at the party headquarters in Nawa-i-Subah, Jammu. Led by Minister Sakina Itoo, the protest escalated as the participants attempted to march outside the complex, though police restricted their movement.
The demonstrators carried placards advocating for the preservation of Article 370 and the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Itoo emphasized the party’s commitment to the peaceful restoration of their rights and status, highlighting that these were unjustly taken away.
The Minister for Education and Social Welfare articulated the NC’s position during the protest, stating, “We demand that our special status and rights, which were snatched from us, be restored. Our party has been protesting peacefully for the restoration of our rights since then.”
Further, Itoo noted that the assembly had previously passed a resolution demanding the restoration of these rights with a two-thirds majority. Additionally, a cabinet resolution was forwarded to the Union Government to ensure that the voices of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are heard.
The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 marked a historic and controversial alteration in the status of Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has seen decades of unrest and political struggles.
In this context, Itoo stressed, “The rights and guarantees that Jammu and Kashmir enjoyed should be reinstated.” This statement resonates with many Kashmiris who feel disenfranchised following the constitutional changes five years ago.
The National Conference, a key political player in the region, argues that the abrogation has severely impacted the social, economic, and political fabric of the erstwhile state. As protests like Wednesday’s gain momentum, the question remains: will the Indian government engage in dialogue regarding the future of Jammu and Kashmir?
