Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has received the prestigious Vir Chakra for his remarkable bravery during Operation Sindoor in May 2023. His courageous actions demonstrated exceptional gallantry amid challenging combat scenarios against Pakistan.
According to the citation published in the Government Gazette on October 4, Group Captain Sidhu flew multiple deep-penetration strike missions. He executed these operations with unparalleled precision while confronting complex threat scenarios and layered air defences.
During the extended four-day conflict, Sidhu’s squadron, equipped with advanced fighter aircraft, successfully completed all assigned objectives while operating in hostile airspace, highlighting the squadron’s effectiveness and efficiency under pressure.
The official citation recognizes, “As Commanding Officer, Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu exhibited exceptional acts of gallantry, resolute leadership, and unwavering dedication to duty in a high-stakes combat environment, disregarding personal safety.” His leadership played a crucial role in the squadron’s success in hostile environments.
Group Captain Sidhu planned and executed operations from three different locations along the Western sector. He personally led missions, making dynamic, real-time decisions to counter evolving threats. His tactical brilliance ensured not only the success of the missions but also the safety of his fellow airmen.
Under his command, the IAF established an enhanced offensive posture, which provided a decisive edge during the operations. This enhanced operational capability stands testimony to the exceptional leadership qualities of Group Captain Sidhu.
In total, nine recipients received the Vir Chakra for their roles in Operation Sindoor, which responded to the Pahalgam terror attack. The other recognized pilots include Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra, all of whom displayed commendable gallantry in their respective missions.
Group Captain Arora’s citation highlights his dynamic leadership during an unescorted strike mission through heavily defended airspace. He executed low-level night manoeuvres to achieve pinpoint accuracy, overcoming significant radar and missile threats.
Additionally, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik earned accolades for his resolute valour and audacious manoeuvring that contributed to tactical confusion among enemy formations. His actions exemplified the spirit of the IAF and its commitment to national security.
On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry awards, along with 40 distinguished service awards. These recognitions reflect the Indian Armed Forces’ dedication, bravery, and resilience in the face of adversity.
