SRINAGAR, June 8: Law enforcement agencies must take a firm stance against unscrupulous elements to maintain the peaceful atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir, said Director General of Police RR Swain on Saturday.
Swain emphasized the importance of peace for the democratic process, stating, “When there is peace, elections can occur, and people can vote without fear. That’s the environment we strive to maintain. Sometimes, we face criticism for our actions, but it’s necessary to keep the peace,” he told reporters after a public darbar in Pulwama district.
“To ensure that the streets remain peaceful, we must be tough on certain individuals. The police are, by definition, law enforcers,” he added.
Swain expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct and high voter turnout during the recent Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir. “We are all pleased that the elections were peaceful and witnessed high participation. This marks a positive beginning, fostering a security environment where everyone can live without fear,” he said.
Regarding terrorist activities in the region, Swain noted a decline in local terrorist numbers but highlighted the presence of 70 to 80 foreign terrorists operating in the Union Territory. “We are transitioning from local to foreign terrorism. Local recruitment has decreased thanks to community efforts, reducing violence and saving lives,” Swain explained.
“These foreign terrorists regularly attempt to infiltrate, bringing weapons and explosives. They don’t contribute to society; they aim to cause destruction,” he said.
Swain acknowledged that some locals provide shelter and assistance to these foreign terrorists. “We must take action against those who aid them to ensure the safety of others,” he concluded.
