Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, signaling a new era for this famed tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. The event promises to elevate Gulmarg’s status as a premier hub for international events and conventions.
The Gulmarg Convention Centre was built at a cost of Rs 21 crore, with construction led by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC). Abdullah aims to make Gulmarg a leader in tourism and international conferencing.
Vision to Position Gulmarg as Asia’s Davos
During the unveiling, Abdullah expressed hope that the convention centre would facilitate a surge in tourism and cultural activities. He compared Gulmarg’s potential to that of Davos, the annual gathering point for world leaders, business magnates, and influencers.
A plethora of distinguished guests were present at the inauguration, including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani and MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq A Shah, alongside other officials. This collective support further underscores the commitment to enhancing Gulmarg’s tourism infrastructure.
Foundation of Future Projects in Gulmarg
In addition, Abdullah laid the foundation stone for the Ski Hire Shop, which is expected to be developed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation. This addition will bolster the existing tourist attractions in Gulmarg.
The Chief Minister emphasized that while physical infrastructure is critical, the true challenge lies in effective usage and maintenance. He remarked, “It is the easiest thing to build four walls. The real responsibility begins with their use and maintenance.”
Plans for Multi-Use Facility
To ensure Gulmarg Convention Centre reaches its full potential, Abdullah highlighted the importance of its use for Conferences, Incentives, Meetings, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism. “We’re considering linking it with SKICC’s marketing network to promote Gulmarg Convention Centre as part of a broader package. Maintenance will also be prioritized,” he explained.
“I dream of the day when Gulmarg becomes synonymous with Davos,” he continued. “We hope to host at least a couple of annual events that attract global participation.”
Enhancing Winter Tourism Experience
Abdullah underscored the necessity for evening recreational opportunities, particularly in the winter months. “Tourists enjoy skiing and sledging, but they often lack engaging activities in the evenings,” he noted.
To address this gap, he suggested setting up a coffee shop, restaurant, and digital cinema projection within the Convention Centre. “This will not only enrich the tourist experience after dark, but also stimulate local revenue,” he added.
Additionally, he advised government departments to utilize the convention centre for various official activities. This includes training programs and meetings, which will maximize the Centre’s usage while providing a refreshing change of venue.
The Future of Gulmarg Convention Centre
In his concluding remarks, Abdullah praised both the NBCC and Gulmarg Development Authority for their roles in this landmark project. “With proper management, this Centre will transform into a vibrant hub for conferences, cultural tourism, and recreational activities,” stated Abdullah.
By harnessing the right resources, Gulmarg can indeed transform into a significant player in the global tourism market, boasting a reputation as “Asia’s Davos.”
