In a heated exchange on Friday, the BJP accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of attempting to weaken India’s democracy. This reaction came a day after Gandhi alleged that over 6,000 voters’ names were deleted from the electoral rolls in Karnataka’s Aland Assembly constituency. He also accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of sheltering those responsible for these alleged irregularities.
Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations and BJP’s Response
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) quickly refuted Gandhi’s claims, with former Union minister and current BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad taking the lead in the counterattack. “Rahul Gandhi is systematically trying to weaken India’s democracy. Why? Because the public doesn’t vote for him,” Prasad asserted.
He continued, criticizing Gandhi for labeling past elections, such as those in 2014 and 2019, as fraudulent. Prasad emphasized that these statements indicate Gandhi’s desperation in light of diminishing support for his party. “All of them have won by rigging the votes. Rahul Gandhi, please stop abusing the democratic choice of the voters of India,” he urged.
BJP Highlights Florid Claims
Prasad pointed out the contradiction in Gandhi’s accusations regarding the Congress party’s performance in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, wherein Congress won the majority. He highlighted how the Congress party had full access to state resources, including the police machinery, yet sought to blame others for the alleged electoral mismanagement.
“In that election, the Chief Election Officer of Karnataka had lodged a complaint… the police, everyone was on the side of Congress, and yet it didn’t work, so why are you making a hue and cry?” Prasad questioned, stressing the importance of accountability in political discourse.
Pointing Out the Timing of Allegations
What’s more, Prasad noted that Gyanesh Kumar was not the Chief Election Commissioner during the crucial 2023 elections but had recently assumed his role. This discrepancy led Prasad to challenge the validity of Gandhi’s perspective: “Speaking lies, making accusations without evidence, and presenting a wrong picture before the country has become Rahul Gandhi’s habit.”
Accusations of Distorting Facts
Prasad didn’t hold back in his criticism, calling Gandhi’s allegations “false” and questioning the wisdom behind them. He said, “What’s wrong with Rahul Gandhi? How many lies will he tell? How much will he distort facts? I could use harsher words than this.”
