As part of a nationwide observance, the BJP unit of Poonch, under the leadership of District President Gurdeep Singh Khalsa and senior party leader Choudhary Abdul Ghani, commemorated National Black Day in Nangali Sahib, located in the Nangali Sahib Sain Baba Block of the Poonch district. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India on 25 June 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a move widely criticized for being an assault on democracy and constitutional values.
Speaking on the occasion, party leaders including Gurdeep Singh Khalsa, Choudhary Abdul Ghani, Rajesh Raina, Gulzar Jatt, and others strongly condemned the Congress party’s actions during the Emergency. They described June 25 as one of the darkest days in Indian democratic history, when the ruling government at the time suspended civil liberties, censored the press, and imprisoned thousands of political opponents without trial.
Gurdeep Singh Khalsa said, “Emergency was not just a political blunder but a brutal blow to the constitutional rights of the Indian people. It exposed the authoritarian mindset of the then Congress leadership.” Choudhary Abdul Ghani added that remembering this day is important to ensure that such a mistake is never repeated in Indian democracy.
The speakers criticized the Congress party for what they termed as “unforgivable suppression of democratic voices,” and called on the youth to educate themselves about the events of 1975, so that democratic institutions are never undermined again.
The event saw participation from hundreds of BJP workers, supporters, and members of the local public, who gathered in solidarity to denounce the Emergency and to reaffirm their commitment to constitutional values and democratic principles.
The program concluded with patriotic slogans and a pledge by party members to protect democracy at all costs. Banners and placards highlighting the injustices of the Emergency era were also displayed during the event.
