Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Wednesday that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have undergone significant transformation since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. This change reflects in infrastructure expansion and enhanced opportunities across education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and sports.
As the nation observes the seventh anniversary of the historic decision on August 5, Modi reassured citizens of the Centre’s commitment to the progress of these Union Territories. He emphasized ensuring that every resident has the chance to ‘dream big, achieve, and contribute’ to the making of a Viksit Bharat—a developed India.
The Prime Minister pointed out the diverse growth in infrastructure and services in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He noted significant improvements in education, healthcare systems, and entrepreneurship initiatives. Sports also received a boost as part of this holistic development strategy.
Modi remarked that the constitutional rights of historically marginalized communities, including women, have been reinforced. This empowerment stems from the thorough implementation of the Constitution of India, a step that he described as essential for effective governance.
In a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Modi reflected, ‘Seven years ago, on this day, Articles 370 and 35(A) became history, marking a decisive new chapter in the journey of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh.’ This statement underscores the transformative impact of the abrogation.
The pivotal decision to abrogate Article 370 was enacted by the BJP-led Central Government on August 5, 2019. This move revoked the special status previously accorded to Jammu and Kashmir and was accompanied by the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
During his address, Modi reiterated his commitment to the growth of these regions, stating, ‘We reaffirm our commitment to the progress of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh.’ He emphasized that the nation strives to provide every citizen with the opportunity to aspire and contribute toward the vision of a developed India.
Furthermore, Modi highlighted the significance of August 5, not just as a date of policy reform but as a year honoring the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He stated, ‘His lifelong commitment to national unity continues to inspire generations.’ Mookerjee’s vision for the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India culminated in a historic moment on August 5, 2019.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which eventually evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He advocated for the abrogation of Article 370, fighting tirelessly for the cause until his death under detention in Srinagar in 1953. His legacy remains pivotal in the BJP’s narrative regarding national unity and development.
As debates continue around the implications of this constitutional change, many stakeholders observe with keen interest the ongoing developments in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The government’s initiatives indicate a dedicated approach towards the both regions to harness their potential fully.
