The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under the leadership of president Mehbooba Mufti, has organized district-level protests across Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. This significant event will demand not only the restoration of Article 370 but also the release of political prisoners.
During a crucial meeting held on Tuesday, Mehbooba Mufti urged all party office bearers to mobilize support and ensure maximum participation in these protests. The decision to demonstrate on the anniversary comes as the party aims to reignite discussions surrounding the status of Jammu and Kashmir.
The PDP issued a statement post-meeting, highlighting that all party functionaries, including MLAs and district presidents from various wings, have been directed to take active roles in coordinating the protests. “As decided by Mehbooba Mufti during today’s meeting, we must demonstrate our united stand in support of Article 370,” the statement read.
Article 370, introduced in 1949, granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The central government abrogated this provision on August 5, 2019, leading to widespread political and social ramifications in the region.
Mehbooba Mufti, while announcing the protests, expressed the party’s commitment to restoring the region’s autonomy. “Our struggles represent the voices of the people who have been adversely affected since the revocation of Article 370. We will continue to fight for their rights,” she stated.
