The Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) convened in Delhi today to finalize its seat-sharing arrangement ahead of the highly anticipated Bihar Assembly elections. This crucial meeting marks an important step for the opposition alliance as they prepare to challenge the ruling party in the state.
In attendance are key leaders, including RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son Tejashwi Yadav, alongside leaders from smaller alliance partners. They have gathered to discuss the critical allocation of seats with Congress leadership, which plays a vital role in the Mahagathbandhan’s strategy.
The urgency of this meeting reflects the increasing pressure on the opposition bloc to reach a consensus on seat distribution. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) recently announced its own seat-sharing formula, intensifying the need for the Mahagathbandhan to solidify its plans.
On Sunday, Mukesh Sahni, chief of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and an ally in the Mahagathbandhan, acknowledged the alliance’s internal differences. He remarked, “Mahagathbandhan has become a bit unwell. We are going to Delhi, and all the doctors are in Delhi, so better treatment will happen there. We will return to Patna after getting healthy.” His humorous take highlights the tensions yet reflects an esprit de corps within the alliance.
In contrast, Bihar Congress leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan attempted to assuage concerns regarding the coalition’s unity. He affirmed, “A meeting will be held, and everything will be finalized. The Mahagathbandhan is united, and the current corrupt government is certain to go.” His confidence suggests that the alliance aims to project a robust front against the NDA.
The NDA’s seat-sharing arrangement has already raised eyebrows. It allocates 101 seats each to Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) and the BJP, while Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secures 29 seats. Additionally, the Hindustani Awam Party (Secular), led by Jitan Ram Manjhi, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) will compete for six seats each. This division of seats presents a formidable challenge for the Mahagathbandhan.
As the clock ticks down to the elections, which are set for November 6 and November 11, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 14, it is imperative for the Mahagathbandhan to present a unified and strategic front. With the stakes this high, the decisions made in Delhi today could significantly impact the political landscape of Bihar.
