Hyderabad Cybercrime Police Arrest Software Employee for Defamation

Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee in Kachiguda for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account. The accused targeted a woman by posting abusive, defamatory, and sexually explicit comments. This incident raised serious concerns about online harassment, particularly against women in India.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for Cyber Crimes, V Aravind Babu, confirmed the arrest. The accused allegedly aimed to defame a woman who is a politically exposed person in Hyderabad. The controversy began in October 2025 when he used the fake account to post objectionable remarks on a video featuring the victim. This video was originally uploaded by the “Pura Local” Instagram channel prior to its further circulation on social media platforms.

Following the woman’s detailed complaint, police promptly registered a case under Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act. They also applied Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against him. Authorities aim to ensure that such online harassment does not remain unpunished.

The police confirmed that the accused leveraged the anonymity of the fake account to hide his real identity while posting offensive content. Their investigation led to the seizure of one mobile phone from his possession, which may contain further evidence related to the case.

Police urge citizens to take necessary precautions when it comes to online safety. They recommend that users take screenshots of abusive profiles, comments, and timestamps before blocking or reporting such accounts, as this documentation can serve as crucial evidence in legal proceedings. “Even in today’s digital age, users must verify unknown social media accounts. The best practice is to avoid engaging with unverified or inflammatory content,” a police official stated.

This incident emphasizes the increasing vigilance required in online interactions to protect individuals from the threats of cyber harassment. Law enforcement agencies in Hyderabad and across India continue to stress the importance of cybersecurity awareness among the general public.
