Hundreds of devotees flocked to the renowned Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala on Monday, celebrating the auspicious first day of the Malayalam month ‘Vrischikam’ and the beginning of the annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season.
Devotees dressed in traditional black attire carried the sacred irumudikkettu, eagerly queuing for hours to offer their prayers. The temple gates opened at 3 a.m. under the auspices of E.D. Prasad Namboothiri, the newly appointed melsanthi (chief priest), with the air filled with chants of Lord Ayyappa’s hymns.
The ceremonial opening of the shrine attracted not only pilgrims but also significant temple officials, including tantri (head priest) Kantararu Mahesh Mohanaru and Devaswom Board Secretary P.N. Ganeswaran Potti. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) reported that a large number of devotees began arriving even before dawn, showcasing the devotion and excitement surrounding this important festival.
Once the sanctum sanctorum opened, the temple conducted a series of rituals such as Nirmalya Abhishekam, Ganapathi Homam, and Neyyabhishekam. The temple will operate in segments, closing its doors at 1 p.m., reopening at 3 p.m., before finally closing at 11 p.m. during the singing of “Harivarasanam,” the revered lullaby dedicated to Lord Ayyappa.
While the temple opened ceremonially on Sunday evening for the two-month-long pilgrimage season, the TDB officials have implemented a cap on daily pilgrims to manage the influx. Daily attendance has been capped at 90,000, comprising 70,000 through the virtual queue system and 20,000 through spot bookings. This initiative aims to enhance the pilgrims’ experience and maintain safety during the crowded season.
In anticipation of the large crowds, additional logistical measures have been taken for the seasonal rush. Local authorities have set up dedicated routes for traffic and parking, ensuring smooth access for incoming pilgrims. Security personnel have also heightened their presence to maintain order and assist devotees throughout the pilgrimage duration.
The Mandalam-Makaravilakku season, known for its significance among Ayyappa devotees, attracts pilgrims from around India and abroad. The devotion displayed during this time exemplifies the cultural importance and spiritual zeal surrounding the Sabarimala pilgrimage, making it a unique experience for many.
